VERREBROEK – The roro-ship Republica di Genova roro-ship from the Italian shipping line Grimaldi Lines was at the time in the Waaslandhaven near Antwerp capsized by a technical defect.
The vessel suddenly turned to starboard and tilt. The 34 crew members and 9 passengers were already of board. The captain noticed on Wednesday night that the stability of the 216-meter-long ship was not good. Some of the Italian and Romanian crew were already disembarked. It is thanks to the captain’s actions that the others were able to secure their safety in good time yesterday. In the accident, containers that were on the upper deck and a number of trucks landed between quay and ship. The ship will be cleared and hoisted up at the earliest next week. Gebr. Van Leeuwen, formerly subcontractor of DISA, has pierced the reaction of slings under the ship.
